How to Play Guitar: D Chord

Remember to stop this video anytime. Practice each chord. I really want you to be familiar with every chord and the variations. When you are playing along with your favorite song and you are starting to jam with your friends, if someone says, “Let us play this and E or E Minor”, you know right where to go. Definitely take the time to practice now because it will pay off.

Let us take a closer look at our open D chord starting with D Major. Now with our open D chord, we actually play the first four strings starting with the fourth string open, which is our D the root note. Our third string, we put our first finger on the second fret. Our second string we actually put our third finger on the third fret and the first string we put our second finger on the second fret. This is the shape of the open D and we only play the first four strings (Demonstration). To change from D Major to D Minor, what we want to do is move our second finger up to the second fret of the third string where our first finger used to be, and our first finger down to the first fret of the first string.

This is the D Minor (Demonstration). Now the D-7, what we do here is we actually move our first finger up to the first fret of the second string. Our third finger comes down to the second fret of the first string. It is opposite of the D Major. This is D seventh. (Demonstration) If you need to pause the video and practice this, please do so.
