How to Play Guitar: Extended Pentatonic Scales
The next scale I want to show is just a little extended pattern. We are going to be using Chromatics. Chromatics means, just a little half steps (guitar playing) rather than just the notes that we are normally playing in the pentatonic scale ((guitar playing). I want to show you a couple of extra notes that you are going to play to give your scale a little more personality and a little more flavor than just the obvious notes that are in the minor pentatonic scale. So we are going to play as here (guitar playing). Now, remember because we are starting on the 6th string 5th fret, that is A (guitar playing). And in the confines of that 4th fret box the fingers that we are going to be using are 1, 3, 4; 1, 2, 3; 1, 2, 3; 1, 2, 3 again (guitar playing sample chords) and finally on the last two strings 1, 3, 4; and 1, 3, 4. And in reverse, it is the same exact way on the way out (guitar playing). So rather than, what we are talking about earlier just a normal pentatonic scale (guitar playing) we are going to be able to do all kinds of different things using this extended pattern (guitar playing). See, you have a whole bunch of more choices than you normally would (guitar playing). You are not restricted to that little (guitar playing) which is a great scale (guitar playing) that had been used by a lot of great players for a lot of years (guitar playing) but with those extra notes you can do a lot a whole lot more. I am going to add one more thing to my extended pentatonic scale, we are going to come out here (guitar playing) to the 3rd string 9th fret, the 2nd string 8th fret (guitar playing), 2nd string 10th fret (guitar playing), 1st string 8th fret (guitar playing), and 1st string 10th fret (guitar playing) so slowly it should look like this. I call the little house pattern, it is kind of like the roof and then the sides of the house, you know my point (guitar playing). One more time slowly (guitar playing). Now if you marry that to my extended pentatonic scale that I have showed you before, you may have something like this (guitar playing) to give you all kinds of idea. Okay, so that is my extended pentatonic scale.
