Alright, let us take the Travis picking pattern one step further here and add some more embellishments and some “More trickier” licks with your right hand.
(Music Demo)
Alright, so, the first part of the tune, we are going back to our regular old Travis picking pattern which goes
(Music Demo)
The next chord is a D with an F# in the root. And, we are doing this one. The way that I usually finger it is that I put my second at the second fret on the third string. Third finger at the third fret on the second with your thumb up and that is F# in the root. You can also make it like a regular old D chord like this and put your thumb up like this
(Music Demo)
So you are going
(Music Demo)
And get this nice third in the root here
(Music Demo)
Which we also move up to a G which you are going play using your third finger on the 6th string because that allows you to do this little melodic pull off. Now, things get a little tricky here. You are going
(Music Demo)
Once again, we have a pull off. When the pull off lands or when the pull off resolves, your thumb has to hit the base string like this
(Music Demo)
So, that may take a little bit of practice. That is A-minor. But this time, instead of just doing a straight pattern, your middle and first finger on your right hand are going to move down on one string. Watch this
(Music Demo)
Again, you start with your middle finger on the first string, index on the second, then it goes to the 3rd, the middle finger moves down to the second string. The index on the 3rd and back to the initial pattern.
(Music Demo)
See it go off again
(Music Demo)
Now, watch here because you are going to be doing a neat little bass lick like this.
(Music Demo)
So watch this again, thumb
(Music Demo)
Index finger on the 3rd string, thumb on the 4th string, the middle on the second, along 6th, index along the third and then thumb on the 6th but now you are going to play the third fret. So, you get kind of this
(Music Demo)
Like that. It is almost like a rock ability like
(Music Demo)
And then right back to the initial pattern.
Now, the second time through, instead of doing the lick that we just played, you are going to do something that is almost a classical lick and it involves starting with an A-minor. Your thumbs on the 5th string, your middle is on the second string
(Music Demo)
And your index plays the 3rd. 3rd finger moves over to the 3rd fret on the sixth string and you squeeze thumb on the 6th, the middle on the 2nd, index on the third back to an A-minor chord. And once again, middle on the 2nd, thumb on the 5th, index on the 3rd to the G with the B on the root. You squeeze 5th and second and index on the 3rd.
Watch it in context. Slowly it goes
(Music Demo)
Tricky little lick
(Music Demo)
Now, we are back to Travis picking again.
