Now we are up to mode Number Six. The sixth mode is Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, wow we got all five of those which means umber six is Aeolian.
We are in a solo using the A Aeolian mode.
[Music Playing]
Now we are going to solo over perhaps the most classic of all rock chord progressions. This is where we have a minor chord, followed by a major chord down a whole step, followed by another major chord down a whole step. Sounds an awful a lot like the end of Stairway to heaven or million other songs. So we are using these three chords, A minor, G and F.
And this is just screaming out A minor. Now A minor is another way to say A Aeolian, we could also say A natural minor. Often when people refer to the minor scale, oh I am just playing A minor, they mean the notes from the A Aeolian mode or you can also say the A natural minor scale. There are many different minor scales as we have come to discover. Dorian is a minor scale, Phrygian is a minor scale. This Aeolian is a minor scale but often when people say oh I am just soloing using the minor scale, this is the one they are referring to the Aeolian mode.
The relative major scale of A minor is C major. So this A minor scale that we are using now also contain the same notes as C major.
So reverse bend on the 7th fret of the G string, come back down off that bend, pull off to the 5th fret of the G string. And then I am going to bend on the 8th fret of the D, full step up, down back up and then grab the 5th fret of the high E string. And then 5, 8, 5 on the B, 7 G, 5 B, 6, 5 on the B string, 7 on the g and then 5 to 5 on the B string to the G string.
Next lick. Some string skipping here, I am going to slide 5 to 7 on the A, 5 to 4 on the G, 5 to 7 on the D, 5 B, 7 D, Hammer on and pull off 5, 6, 5 on the B, 7 G, 5 on the B, 7, 5, 4 on the G, final note of this phrase, 7th fret of the D string.
Next phrase. So I am starting of by forming the top of an A minor chord. 7th fret D string, 5th fret G, B and E but then I am just kind of raking to through that, not much attention to each individual note, just working my way quickly to the top string while muting with the right hand. And then I am going to play 7 to 8 on the high E string. Now I am going to hammer on and pull off 7, 8, 7, 5 on the high E, 8 on the B, 5 on the E, slide in to 10 on the B, and end this phrase by playing 8 high E, 10 B.
Next phrase. So here I am going to bend on the 15th fret of the B, and then strike that note again and release the bend. 13, 15 on the B, 15 on the high E, reverse bend 15th fret B string, come back down and the final note of this phrase 13 on the B.
Here is the next phrase. So we are going to slide here using my fourth finger I am going to slide 7 to 8 on the high E and then back to the 5th fret and then grab 5 on the B. On the high E, now slide 8, 10 pull off to 7, 8 on the B. Now slide 10 to 12 on the high E and pull off to 8 and then grab 10 on the B. Now slide 12 to 15 on the high E, pull off to 12, grab 13 on the B, and then final note will be 14 on the G string.
Next phrase. So here I am going to start 12 to 13 on the B, grab 15 on the high E, 13 on the B string. Now slide back from 12 to 8 on the B string. Back to the 10th fret of the B, grab 12 on the high E. So far we have done this. Now 10, 8 on the B, come back to the 5th fret, play 5 to 6 on the B, 8 on the high E, 6 to 5 on the B, 7 to 5 on the G, that ends that phrase.
Now we are going to have a legato run using 16th note triplets, that is six notes for every one beat, or you can break that down further and just thinking groups of three. In any case we are going to start off on the low E string playing 8, 10, 12. Try and just pick once per string. So 8, 10, 12 on the A string now, 9, 10 on the D, 12 on the A. 9, 10, 12 on the D, 9 on the G, back to the D string 12, 10, 9, 10, 12. Now 9, 10 on the G, 12 on the D, 9, 10, 12 slide to 14th on the G to end the phrase.
And here is the final run of this solo. So here we are doing some hammer on and some pull offs. We are going to do the same sequence on each string. Starting of on the high E string 12, 8, 10, 12, 10, 8 six note phrase. Same thing on the B string, same sequence on the G string but we are going to play 12, 9, 10, 12, 10, 9, same thing on the D string, and then we will end on the note C 10th fret of the D string. Okay let us go back and put all of these together. One, two, three. And there are some ideas using the A Aeolian mode.
