Chromatic-Jazz lick Bird-style www.dolphinstreet.com
[Demonstration]
So, what I am doing here. I am playing lot of chromatic notes as you can tell. I am playing a key of E.
[Demonstration]
This is on the IX fret and I am playing over three strings. The D string and the G string and the B string. Starting on the D string on the IX fret. I am playing the first note here,
[Demonstration]
We are switching to G string on the IX fret,
[Demonstration]
And I am doing this with my first finger.
[Demonstration]
That is the first part. And then, I am switching to the XI fret in the G string,
[Demonstration]
And then I am switching to the B string on here. On the VIII fret and then, playing chromatic notes up to the XII fret.
[Demonstration]
Okay, one more time.
[Demonstration]
On the D string, starting.
[Demonstration]
This is the phrase that Charlie Parker use once in awhile. I learned this from him while listening to his records.
[Demonstration]
Okay. So, we have.
[Demonstration]
Now, this part,
[Demonstration]
That starts on the B string on the X fret.
[Demonstration]
I am taking one up to the XII fret.
[Demonstration]
Now, there I am doing a pull off,
[Demonstration]
Down to the X fret and then the IX fret.
[Demonstration]
So, it sounds,
[Demonstration]
I will pull off there and then another one here.
[Demonstration]
So, these three notes
[Demonstration]
I am now picking the first note and after that
[Demonstration]
Switch down back to the G string on the IX fret
[Demonstration]
And then, the D string in the XI fret and the IX fret.
[Demonstration]
And then, back to the G string on IX fret. One more time slowly
[Demonstration]
And here is the whole phrase in a slow tempo.
[Demonstration]
I am hitting that note three times at the end. Now, the way I am playing this is doing also slides what you call slide in. I am not sure of the right term I am sorry. I am talking about this part.
[Demonstration]
Which comes there.
[Demonstration]
Now, you could play
[Demonstration]
If you wanted to but the difference is I want to have that sound sliding in.
[Demonstration]
Because it makes more of like Charlie Parker played it, that if I picked each note.
[Demonstration]
That is picking them
[Demonstration]
And this is the sliding part.
[Demonstration]
And the last note that I am hammering on
[Demonstration]
With that.
[Demonstration]
You can also play the same figure up in the key of A if you wanted to.
[Demonstration]
Now, you are starting on the XIV fret to play the same idea.
[Demonstration]
What I want you to take you with from this lesson is this part.
[Demonstration]
That is the chromatic move from the minor third.
[Demonstration]
Major third,
[Demonstration]
The fourth,
[Demonstration]
The flat side,
[Demonstration]
And the natural five.
[Demonstration]
That is the cool mood that you can use in many ways when you are playing blues and jazz.
