Hi! My name is Andy Corno with Leaders Lacrosse Camps, Clinics and Private Lessons, here to show you the game of lacrosse. Right now, we're going to focus on one of the most important aspects of this game, and that's, picking up the ground ball.
At the college, professional, and even the high school and grade school level, the most important statistic that coaches look at, is the ground ball battle. Often times, the team who comes up with more ground balls, ends up winning the game. Simple, more opportunities for your team to score, and less opportunities for the other.
So here's how to pick up a ground ball. First and foremost, we want to make sure that we get extremely low when we pick up a ground ball. If we're picking the ball up with our right hand, we want to get our right foot nice and close to the ball. Next, get our whole body down and really low. Next, we want to make sure that our back hand is down and low to the ground. It doesn't necessarily have to be on the ground, but very, very low.
Next, when we go to scoop up a ground ball, we want to make sure that we're really aggressive when we scoop through it. Don't try to slowly baby a ball, make sure that you scoop hard and throw, just like this. Good job! After you pick up your ground ball, keep running, get your head up and look to make the open pass.
That's how you pick up a ground ball.
