Hi! My name is Andy Corno with Leaders Lacrosse Camps, Clinics and Private Lessons, here to show you the game of lacrosse.
This part, we're going to be talking about how to throw and catch. First and foremost, when you throw and catch, you want to make sure that you're holding the stick properly. When you move to throw, you want to have your top hand in the middle of the stick, bottom hand close to the bottom.
If you're a beginner, you can choke up just a little bit. That will help you out, but for you intermediate players, holding that top hand up in the middle of the stick and that bottom hand down on the bottom, will make you a better thrower.
When we catch, it's very important that we have our hands nice and soft, when we receive the pass, and also a good tip for you beginners is to hold our top hand up close to the throat of the stick. When we catch the ball, having it close to the throat of the stick, allows you to use your hand to guide the ball into the stick. When you go to throw, you're going to need to drop the hand down to about the middle to throw the ball.
Also, when we're throwing the ball, have your elbow up, and stick behind your head. That will make you a better thrower. Now that I've explained how to throw and catch, I'm going to demonstrate for you.
Notice, when Billy and I have a catch, I have my stick straight up and down and in front of my face, and I give with it as I receive the pass. Billy does the same.
Also, after I catch it, I bring the ball back behind my head, drop my hand to about the middle of the stick, raise my elbow up and release the pass. Again, stick is straight up and down, when I receive the ball. A lot of beginners, when they try and catch, they try and catch the ball on its way down, and often times with the stick, straight like this. Watch what happens.
Very hard to catch like that. We want to make sure that we hold the stick straight up and down when we catch and give with it, dropping the hand to throw.
Those are the basic fundamentals to throwing and catching.
