www.LessonsWithTroy.com presents Lil Liza Jane Taught by Troy Brenningmeyer
[Demonstration]
Hi welcome to Lessons With Troy.com I’m Troy Brenningmeyer for this weeks lesson
we’ll learn in the tune Lil Liza Jane in the key of G so we’re going to print out your tab
and let’s go and get going here for the first phrase. Okay here’s the first phrase and if
you’re following along in your tab this is going to be measured as one, two, and to
measure three and it’s starts in the end of beat 3 for that little pick up there on measure
one so I count you off 1, 2, 3…
[Demonstration]
1, 2, 3…
[Demonstration]
1, 2, 3…
[Demonstration]
Okay as you can tell you’re playing this 1st string a whole lot there. That’s going to be
droning out pretty much on every note that you’re going to be playing.
[Demonstration]
Right and then the way that I’m doing that is with my right hand playing lower notes with
my thumb and that 1st string I always play with my middle finger there. Now I’ll show
you the right hand in just a second but let me show you exactly what I’m doing this little
pick up here…
[Demonstration]
You’re going to be droning up this 1st string the whole time and you go open 4th string
and hammer-on to the 2nd fret 4th string and open 3rd and then the whole time you’re
playing also this first string with each note just like that. Okay and that leads us into
measure number 2 which sounds like this.
[Demonstration]
So again, what you’re doing there once again every time you hit a note you’re playing
also that first string open so you’re sliding up on your 3rd string from 2 to 4 and then play
open and then fret 2. Make sure you’re in tune there and then open again so from fret 2 to
fret 4 and I’m just going to say this 3rd string and just keep in mind that every time I play
anything on my 3rd string I’m also playing that open 1st string with it right now together.
[Demonstration]
So slide up from fret 2 to fret 4 and do open and fret 2 and then open and that’s the first
part of measure 2 just like that…
[Demonstration]
So things to keep in mind is just to play in tune to make sure when you slide into that 4th
fret 3rd string that’s in tune with your 2nd string as well as you can get it and then also that
2nd fret is in tune. A good way to check it is to just to play a little D chord there right
that’s open 4th string 2nd fret. My 3rd string and open 1st kind of memorize how that looks
and right where you borrowed this and all this time my bar was tilted up so I’m just
getting the tip of my bar on these.
[Demonstration]
Just like that and then the 2nd time in measure number 2 you go, you do that real quick
which is slide from fret 2 to fret 4 on your 3rd string. Fret 2 to fret 4 back to fret 2 and
then open and that’s played with also your first string just like that and that’s measure
number 2.
[Demonstration]
Okay measure number 3 sounds like this…
[Demonstration]
What you’re doing there is real quick you’re sliding from 2 different form in 3rd string
and you do that twice and each time you’re playing also that open first string with it.
[Demonstration]
And that’s open first string fret 2 or sorry fret 4 in your 3rd string back to open 1st string.
[Demonstration]
So fret 2 to fret 4 and you do that twice and I open 1st string 4th fret on your 3rd string
back to open 1st string so that sounds like a little slower. Okay so that full phrase again
measures 1 through 3 sounds like this…
[Demonstration]
One more time…
[Demonstration]
So it’s a real nice opportunity to really try to make sure you’re in tune you know when
you go back to that 2nd fret you don’t want it to be out of tune. Really work on playing it
real slow and making sure you are as in tune as what you can. Okay let me show you the
right end.
Okay here’s the right end for measures 1, 2, and 3. I’ll play it slowly here’s the intro…
[Demonstration]
Just like that that’s measure one…
[Demonstration]
Okay.
[Demonstration]
Just with my thumb and middle finger there and now your two sounds like this or it looks
like this and sounds like this.
[Demonstration]
Pretty straight forward there in this thumb and middle finger.
[Demonstration]
Okay and measure 3 sounds like this…
[Demonstration]
The 7 that I do is I kind of cut that first one short a little bit so you just by teaching and it
cuts it off.
[Demonstration]
Just like that…
[Demonstration]
Okay so that full phrase for measures 1, 3, 3 sounds like this.
[Demonstration]
One more time…
[Demonstration]
Okay let’s move on.
