Hi! This is Paul Huppert with OnLineLessonVideos.com.
In this lesson, we’ll be covering all 12 minor keys in the melodic minor form. For those of you that read music, there is downloadable sheet music that comes along with this lesson. And for those who don’t, we do have a slow version of each scale and arpeggio with the close-up of the left hand so that you can follow along. Let’s get started.
The first scale we’ll be studying in this series is the key of A melodic minor. Now, melodic minor distinguishes itself by raising the sixth and seventh steps on the ascent and then lowering these steps back down to their original form in the decent. Let me show you what I’m talking about. If this is the first step, second step, third, fourth, fifth. At this point, we play F# instead of an F natural even though F# would not be found in the key of A minor we raised it to make it in the melodic form. Likewise with the seventh step, we raised one-half step from a G natural and then A being the final step.
Let me show that to you one more time. First step [Demonstration] F#, G#. Now on the decent, we lower this pitches back to their original state which would be the naturals, G natural, F natural and then so on. [Demonstration]
To run it a little quicker, you’ll notice the raising and lowering of the sixth and seventh steps. [Demonstration]
Now, let’s go through the entire scale in two octaves with the metronome at 60 to the quarter and I’ll give you a tuning A. [Demonstration]
First, we will begin with half notes, two beats to the half. [Demonstration]
Slurred quarters [Demonstration], arpeggios one quarter note to the beat [Demonstration].
