Hi I am Danny Gill from Lick Library and today I am going to show you how to play rhythm guitar for a 12-bar blues in the key of E.
There are a lot of ways to play guitar for a 12-bar blues, this is just one of them and it goes like this.
One, two, three, four, one,
[Demo]
So this is a combination of using an E6 chord and an E9 chord. What am I going to do is I am going to bar on the top three strings on the seventh fret, slide up to the ninth fret back to the seventh fret.
One, two, three, four, one,
So, I am starting on the down beat of two. When I bar on the 7th fret on the top three strings, we are outline the sound of an E9 chord. When we slide up to the 9th fret we are outlining an E6 chord, so E9, E6.
And we are going to do this four times. That will take us through the first four measures.
One, two, three, four, one,
Now, we area going to move to an A chord, we are also going to play A6 and A9. We are going to start of 5D, 4G, five on the B string that will outline an A9 chord. We will slide at two frets. That will outline an A6 chord and then we will slide back to the first chord at A9.
So for the measure of A, it will sound like this.
One, two, three, four, one,
And we will do that two times and then go back to E two times, our first ref. So here are measures five, six, seven, and eight.
One, two, three, four, one,
For measure nine, we are going to go to a B chord and we are going to play the same ref that we did for A but we are going to move it up two frets.
So we are going to play B9 slide up to B6 back to B9, we will do that for one measure before going back to A.
Now, we are back to one measure of E, this is measure number 11.
And the whole thing will end with C9 to B9.
So for the C9 chord, we are going to play eight on the D string, 7G, eight on the B string and then move this chord back one-half step and we get B9.
And there is the rhythm for 12-bar blues in the key of E. Let us try the whole thing together from the top. We have to kind of imagine the base and the drums here.
Remember, we are going to start on beat number two.
One, two, three, four, one,
And there is the 12-bar blues in the key of E.
