Hi folks! How are you doing? Mike Herberts here. A bit croaky today. I’m having a bit of a bad cold for the last couple of days, but I managed to scrape myself off my death bed especially for you, so that I could get this little video out before Christmas.
So, it’s a lovely song, I don’t need to introduce it, “Silent Night” everyone knows that. And it’s very simple. I’ve done it in G. There was a difficult D chord in the original, where you’d have to reach up here. I finally found the work on for that just moved up to the second position D, we have an open D string there. It sounds perfectly acceptable. And we have another D7 up there, but above from that, it’s very straight forward. Its based just on a arpeggio style of picking. And I produced it because one of you requested me to do an arpeggio version of “Silent Night”. So here it is, I do listen sometimes. I do listen all the time, honestly.
Okay so I’ll talk you through it just chord by chord. It’s very simple. Now we hold what it looks like a G chord except it’s called something else, I have no idea what, but it’s 2nd string instead of 1st on the 3rd fret. And we do this pick, we don’t really need this finger here on the rest of the chord. And sometimes people e-mailed me and say, “Why did we hold down strings that we don’t need to play?” The answer is, you shouldn’t, but we do because we’re conditioned to do it. So, here’s the beginning of “Silent Night”. It’s in 3/4 time 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, so, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3… We do that twice. We then move up to this D which is the 1st string 5th fret, and then we hold down the 7th on the second and 3rd strings. We play the D open the 4th string… So, we do that 1 pick. You’ll notice the patterns the same, more or less all the way through the beat. Then we moved down to first position D so it’s… Then an ordinary D… Back to the G… So, from the top, 1, 2, 3… Up to the D here… Back down to this D… Full G… Then we move to the C position. The C chords, sorry… And then open, so it’s a C… Play the arpeggio… Put the pinky down on the 3rd fret 1st string so… Then back to this G again… We’ll do that twice. Then back up to the D again… And then this little thing here we’re holding the 8th fret 1st string, and then the first fingers across on the 7th. Again we use the open D string… We don’t complete that pick because we have to do… So, it’s … And then went back into a G chord… And this lovely slide… And again we just keep the G chords slide it all the way up, so the 7th fret. So from the top, nice and slowly… second sign… Back up to the D again…Into the G chord… Then we play a G… With the pinky across… So, it’s the two out strings… Then the 2nd and 5th… and then all open, and we play the 2nd and the 4th… So, it’s… Then we put quickly, a D chord down… So, it’s… Now, technically what we’re doing is we’re going from a D to a D7, and we could play it like this… And if you want to play it that way, then play it that way… And then…
Now, I normally do try and sing along to this things, and we’ll give it a go, but I do mind my voice is particularly husky at the moment, so we’ll try…(song)
Well I didn’t do that to well, but never mind, you got the idea. Go and have fun with it, and Merry Christmas to everyone. Season’s Greetings to all. Been a really good year, really enjoyed doing it and some keep the e-mails coming in. Keep practicing. Let’s see if we can take the world by storm, and get the whole world play the guitar. Okay so have a good time and, hopefully, maybe it comes at you before Christmas, but if not, definitely after Christmas. Okay, take care.
