This drill is to help the catchers learn how to field. Bunts aggressively with the proper footwork and make the throws. What we going to do is, a friend, parent, or coach can stand behind you roll the ball out and as you are retrieving the ball they yell which base they would like you to throw it to. Repetition wise, you know, you can go through this in a matter of minutes; it is probably best to do at least five to each base.
So here we go one, one, one, one; it needs to be aggressive. You need to explosive out of the zone. Three, three, three; hustle back in-between, hustle back in-between. One, one, one, one; two, two, two. Remember, explode from behind the plate and break down as you receive the ball. Three, three, three; two, two, two; one, one, one, one; very nice.
There is going to be a variation in the way that you throw the first to when you field the ball as a catcher. You have seen how she has come on a ball up the line this way, how she receives the ball moving in to her target. If the ball moves up the third baseline and you need to throw it to first; as you approach the ball you actually go on the first base side of the ball to prepare to throw. So that you come up all ready in line with your throw; instead of, let us show them the other way. Instead of coming up this way on the third base side and having to turn your entire body.
So, again, you want to receive -- come out to receive the ball with your back to the first base side to round it so that you are already in line to make the throw. Let's practice a few of those. One, one, one, one; one, one, one, one, one.
One of the reasons that you want to make sure that you receive the ball coming around it in this manner is if you have to close up first and it takes you anywhere between a half second to a second extra to close up; how important is that when you figure the average runner is going to cover 20 -- between 20 and 30 feet in a second.
So if it is a real fast person bunting the ball and you give him anywhere from a half second to a second in your mechanics you have given them anywhere between 20 to 30 feet up the line. So it's very important that you do things with the proper mechanics and form. One one, one, one; one one, one, one, one; three, three, three; two, two, two.
