Hi everybody! My name is Jonathan Lawson. I play fiddle in acoustic guitar for Sara Evans. And when I’m not on the road with Sara, I play in a band called Tin Cup Gypsy. Today, I’m going to show you guys how to do the fiddle solo from “Suds in the Bucket”.
This song was recorded with the violin tune to half a step high. So I’ve got my violin tune to half step and you probably need to do that for it to work right. But I’m going to start out with the solo and then I’ll show you how to do some of the little verse signature licks there and we’ll slow everything down so you can see how to do it.
All right, so this is the solo section of “Suds in the Bucket” and I like to practice it with a metronome because that will show at least where to come in correctly. So I’ve got my metronome set on quarter note at 160 and here it goes. [Demonstration]
All right, this is the solo section slid down, so you can see what’s going on and I’ve set my metronome with a quarter-note at 92 beats per minute, so here it goes. [Demonstration]
All right, the next little section that I’m going to show you are the fiddle fills in the first verse and the lyric that Sara sings is she starts connote on the screen door. So the fiddle section comes in right on the down bit of that measure and I’ve got my metronome back at 160, so here it goes. [Demonstration]
Okay. Now, we’re going to slow down the section and set our metronome back to 92 and here it goes. [Demonstration]
So that was “Suds in the Bucket” made popular by Sara Evans, fiddle part played by Aubrey Haynie, embellished by me during Sara’s live shows. I hope you liked it and I hope it was clear enough for you and you can take it home and learn it.
