How to Play The Top Gun Theme Song
Hey guys! What’s up? It’s Aaron. The next one I’m going to teach you is that is actually the first one I learned to play on my guitar. It’s the “Top Gun” theme song. So if you haven’t seen “Top Gun”, it’s a movie, fighter pilot. Tom Cruise is on it, Val Kilmer and anyway. So, it’s really a pretty simple riff to play. It sounds something like this. I’m going to show you how.
[Demonstration]
And when you slide a pattern and did the same little riff just higher after that. So basically, I’m going to teach you that you guys right now. The tabs are over here from YouTube, down here freeandeasyguitar.com. If not, check it out, it’s www.freeandeasyguitar.com. So, all right! The first thing I want you to do is I want you to start out barring the bottom four strings with your pointer finger on the fifth fret. Put your pointer finger, bottom fourth string, it’s fifth fret barring across. We’re in standard tuning by the way.
Now, the first note you’re going to make is your pinky finger. It’s going to be on your second string of your B String on the eighth fret. That’s where you keep your pinky finger B. So the first note you play is actually the fifth fret of the G string. So, on the G string you put fifth fret. Then you come down and hit the B string where your pinky is on the eighth fret.
So it’s G string, fifth fret, the eighth fret note on B string twice, so then you’re going to play six, five, six, five, on the B string. And you’re going to use that because your six is going to play this middle finger on the B string. Your five is going to be that bar. So you take your middle finger out. Let’s get a replay.
So, start from the beginning pinky at top. And you’re going to play fifth fret on G string, twice on the eighth fret there on the B string, then six, five, six, five. Once you complete that second six, five, six, five there on the B string, your ring finger needs to be on the seventh fret of your G sharp. So, put that ring right down on the seventh fret of your G string, play that twice. So seventh fret on the G string twice. Then you take the pick on the ring finger up for like on this real quick, you play five, five. So, you play it seven, seven, five, seven. So, all together that will sound like this from the beginning.
[Demonstration]
After that last five, seven, you’re going to go back to the fifth fret here on this B string. You’re point at five then back up to seventh fret on the G. Then on the B string five, six, five, then five on the G string. So, in this little whole riff, anything that you play on this G string is either going to be the just the bar across in the fifth fret, or you have something those something they were your ring finger placed on seventh fret.
So anytime you see a seven on the tab, you play that through the ring finger. Anytime you see an eight on the B string, it’s played with your pinky. Anytime you see a six on a B string, it’s played through your middle finger. Anytime, you see a five on the B string or G string, it’s just played by the pointer finger barring.
So, the main part you’ve covered right is this.
[Demonstration]
So after you play the five, six, five, five on the G, you’re going to see on the tab it says 3S53. What that means is you’re going to drop your pointer finger from the fifth beyond on the third. Whenever I drop it now, I’d like to get rid of the bar because it makes it easier to slide. Well, you can keep the bar if you prefer.
So, then you’re going to play on the B string third fret, you’re going to play three, slide to five. See I’m only picking once. The slide last for second as well and you’re going to go back play it three again as you go.
Now, as you’re playing and slide your guitar, it’s a lot easier to just do instead of three slide to five, and then play three and pick again, you can just play just to slide, slide, slide, so three, five, five, seven, three without picking it in. All right!
Then, you going to go to the G string and this time I won’t use the bar because you’re going right back up to this bar up here. So, you’re going to put your finger kind of moves the emphasis on the G string on the first fret. They’re really your barring in bottom three strings. Play the G string the string and you can slide it all at the fifth frets like from one.
Once, you slide that back up to the fifth fret, you find the same exact intro or riff that you just played in the last one of the tab, except when you get to the end instead of going down five slide three, instead of doing that, once you get to the end you’re just going to play that eight and the B string to end it.
So, just to let you know I’m going to play through both fret, both lines and that first tabs, so you can count with the tab unless you got to feel for it sounds like. So you start out with your bar across the bottom three strings or four, it doesn’t matter, on the fifth fret pinky starts from the eighth fret of your B string. It’s something like this.
[Demonstration]
The last note, A fret B string. The next thing you’re going to do is you’re going to go higher on the next but what I want you to realize is every single motion you just did with the fifth fret bar in the eighth fret is the fret you reach is exactly the same up here except that your bars down the eleventh fret and the highest thing you’ve reached is on the fourteenth. So you think eight minus five is three, fourteen minus eleven is three. So, you’re using exact the same finger pattern and everything. It’s just that instead of to be on the fifth fret and going up here eighth, five, eight, eight, six, five, six, five, seven, seven.
Now, you’re eleven, fourteen, twelve, eleven, twelve, eleven, thirteen, and thirteen. So, that little pattern we just played from the fifth, now you move up to the eleventh and it sounds like this.
[Demonstration]
And you slide is now nine, eleven, nine. I still have to do the slide from the bottom. So from one bottom three strings, on the eleventh, fourteen, fourteen, and finish on the fourteen note. All together!
[Demonstration]
That’s it class, enjoy this one and I’m sure it will be part of you too or get together where you can buzz the sound and your friends will like it so. Good luck. If you haven’t seen, you go watch “Top Gun”.
