All right guys. This one I think is going to be a lot of fun for you. I did this past weekend on Friday night a day I was in a talent show, just kind of some people that I know down here come to put together. And they kind of—I won’t say—but they asked me to do a nice play and I told the lady that I would do it. I probably should try that.
So, the song that I did I want to do I want to do a kind of funny song and so I run the song by gone in Tim Hawkins. He is a Christian comedian but basically, I learned it and performed it, and apparently everybody liked it. I was pretty nervous. This was my first gig I guess you’d say. But I went pretty well and everybody felt I was pretty funny. So I thought that I want to teach you guys. I thought why not teach you about this song.
So basically when you hear the song that Tim’s sent, know when you hear the video, the beginning of the song whether you watch Tim Hawkins on YouTube, the song is called, Things You Don’t Say to Your Wife. So, if you’re a husband and you want to have a little fun with your wife or you want to play this like a rehearsal dinner, I’ve had actually a couple of people ask me if I would play it at their friends and family’s rehearsal dinner’s, the night before the wedding.
So, that’s kind of funny with you guys can do the same thing. If you’re play the school talent show, I’m sure your teacher will love it, stuff like that. So basically, it has to be on tuning and I’m going to show you that because also in this lesson, I want to kind of give you guys a little tip when I guess singing. I’ve just started to take a vocal lessons for a couple of months now. But there’s a kind of a really easy thing that I learned that I think it will help you guys out.
So, my guitar is in half step down tuning. All right, normally this song is played started tuning and it starts out a little something like this.
[Demonstration]
You got to probably think that’s Time of Your Life, Good Riddance by GreenDay. That’s their kind of rhythm that is played to. So Tim Hawkins performs in standard tuning. My guitar is in half step down tuning now. So it’s a half step lower. So I just wanted you to hear it in standard tuning by putting a capo along.
Now I had trouble singing it in standard tuning like Tim Hawkins or GreenDay. It’s a little high for me. So what you can do is you can actually if the song is a little too high for you, you can try tuning your entire guitar down half step, just like what I did. Say it’s Down the Road by Kenny Chesney, and the song has the capo on the 2nd fret. And it’s a little too high for you, you can take the capo off. Then you now move it down full step, and it will be a little bit lower.
[Demonstration]
Something like that so, you can kind of adjust that song to fit your vocal range. A lot of Taylor’s Swift stuff, if you girls have a hard time getting this high as she is and the capo is on the 3rd fret move the capo down to the 1st fret or take it off. And just kinds of work with it up and down the neck until you feel comfortable.
Sometimes, if the song is in half step down tuning, there’s really not a lot you can do. It’s actually transposed and I will have lessons on that later. How to transposed a chord but for right now, the chords basically you know, if you want to learn of the actual playing part of the Tim Hawkins song, then you can actually know what’s the Good Riddance. The GreenDay video has two lessons on it. But the picking pattern is just these four chords G.
[Demonstration]
It’s a G, it’s D, it’s a G, the C four measure to D four measure. Now, what I did for the show, I just play in this will Intro once and then I just strummed it.
[Demonstration]
And really in each verse, the first two times through, you go to G for two measures, to C9 to D. Do that again and that third time through, you go to Em, to D, C9, to G, and do that the second time too. So, it’s four measure, four complete lines there. Then you get to the chord which is Em, to G, Em, to G, and the tabs were in YouTube. I actually tab this—put the chords next to the words out for this song.
So what I’m going to now is play that for you so you kind of hear it how it goes. The technical part you’ll if you want to learn of picking, then you can go watch the Good Riddance, Time of Your Life video. It’s the same picking and then I’m going to just move my—So the song normally is in standard tuning. My guitar is half step down. So it’s going to be a little lower. But I think this is going to make it easier for you some of you guys. So it makes it easier for me. So, I’m going to move this camera back here so you can get kind of kind of take a good view at my guitar and I going to play it for you. So this is exactly how I played at the talent show and I think you guys would have fun playing it too. So—
[Demonstration]
And in Tim Hawkins, this video actually come appearing to solo. It plays one note, it goes okay and it comes right out just kind of comic relief. And the third verse is—
[Demonstration]
That outro is the same one that’s on the Good Riddance, Time of Your Life lesson that I’ve teach on here. So check that song. If you couldn’t understand some in the, lyrics listen over here. And learn that song and play it for you friends or your family, or whatever. I’m pretty sure you’re going to get kick at them.
So and that’s a good song too if you’re kind of nervous about your vocals, we taught how it was, if you’re nervous about your vocals don’t worry about it because even if you don’t nail over note, it’s a comedy song. So people are listening to lyrics and they’re all laughing anyway.
So it’s good too because the laughter will kind of relax you a little bit. So if you’re looking for a song to start off your music career debut, try that one, you get a kick out of it and I’m sure people will love it. And that will be a good experience for you. So take care guys, good luck.
