Hi! I’m Danny Gil from Lick Library, and today I going to show you a Walking Base Blues in the Key of C. I’m only going to use the fingers on my right hand, no pick at all. I’ll play through it, and then we’ll break it down. 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4…
The first chord is a C9 chord. I’ll start of by playing the base note there, 3rd fret of the A string, followed by the remainder of the chords. 2nd fret on the D string, 3rd fret, top 3 strings... Following this, I’m going to have a baseline, open low E string… 1st fret… 2nd fret… 3rd fret… Now to the A string, open… 1st fret… 2nd fret. Put all that together, we’ve done this... And we’re going to repeat that 4x...
Now we’re going to repeat this, but in the key of F. So it’s going to look like this... So we’re going to start with the root note F, 8th fret of the A string… and then I’ll form the rest of this F9 chord, 7 on the D, 8 on the top 3 strings... And now our chromatic baseline on low E string, 5, 6, 7, 8… A string 5, 6, 7… So 1 measure would sound like this…And we’ll do that for 2 measures… Back to our first riff in the Key of C for 2 measures… Now in bar 9, we’re going to riff around an E7 chord… 7 on A string that’s the root note E… then I’ll play 6D along with 7 on the G… repeat that. So far we’ve done this... Now on the low E string, 6 to 5, now I’m going to riff around an A7 shape, 5D, 6 on the G…back to 5 on the low E… and then play 5D along with 6G once again… So our riff for the A7 chord would sound like this… So, picking it up from the E, here’s what we’ve just done… Our next phrase goes like this… So, here we’re going to play 4 to 5 on A string… Now strike 4D, along with 5G… back to 5 on the A string… Once again, strike 4D along with 5G… We’ve just done this… And now we’re going to play this phrase… 4 low E to 3 in a low E string… And now we’ll strike 3 on the D string along with 4 on the G string… Back to 3 on the low E… Play 3 on the D along wit 4 on the G once again, that’s outlined on the G7 chord… And then we’ll play 2 on the A string… which will take us back to our first riff in the Key of C. So here’s what we’ve just done…
Now we play a riff in C… We play that one time, and the second time, this will be our last bar, we’re going to play this phrase… So we start off with a root note C, 3rd fret of the A string… Strike the rest of that C9 chord… Play our chromatic baseline, open low E… 1st fret… 2nd fret… And then we’ll end with G7#9, 10th fret A string… 9th fret D string… 10th fret G string… 11th fret B string… Strike the 10th fret of the A string again… Strike the chord once again… and then we can repeat the whole thing. So here’s the last bar one more time…
Now let’s go back and put all of that together. Here we go. 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4… And there’s a Walking Base Blues in the Key of C.
