Hey, this is John with learningguitarnow.com. In this lesson, I’m going to show you a little bit about Eric Clapton Part 2 and the lesson before, I broke down a little bit about the cream style Eric Clapton have more you know, rock guitar sound and rock guitar leaks. This one is going to be more based on his Derek and the Dominoes type blues guitar playing and I would have told you a different sound.
But anyway this is a leak in the style of Eric Clapton on the breakdown. I’m going to breakdown for you and talk about the leak for a little bit. So the leak sounds like this [Demonstration]. So pretty standard Eric Clapton style leak that I used, you know, quite a bit influence in the 70’s, influence by BB King, Freddie King, and it’s played I the key of B. I’m playing on the key of B, it’s kind of similar to “Whatever You Do”, “Have You Ever Loved a Woman”, and we’re kind of starting now in the BB’s little position here. Once again this is in the key of B.
So the first part of the leak, you slide into the 13th fret of the G-string, common BB King moves there. And then hit the root note on the 12th fret of the B-string, and you do this high-bend up on the 14th fret, and you’ve been that to the flat 7th. So the pit sound, 17th fret and lot of times you can bend that 2 frets up, you get the major 6th, bend it up 3 frets and you get the flat 7th, which was just a cool move.
After you do that, you just hit 14, 12 twice and pretty simple on the lick. And then bend that 14, 14 bend up, pull it down, 14, then 12, 14 13 on the G-string 12, slowly. And we move back here to the 10th fret on the high E-string, flat 3rd bend that up, 7th, 10th, 7th pull off and you’re going to bend up only 9th fret of the G-string. You got one of them pull and release type dills, bend up, release, pull off. Then another common Eric move here is you got the 9th fret on the D-string, 9th fret on the G-string, hammer on from 7th to 8th and then hit 9th fret, so slowly that part of the lick.
And the next part we’re going to bend this—we’re going to bend here the 9th fret of the G-string and the 10th fret of the B-string. You actually just hold down the 10th fret. So once again, pretty standard blues moves there. We’re going to do it three times and then apply vibrato. That’s pretty, must be the hard part. Let’s get in the vibrato and I like to do it with my 3rd and 2nd fingers. It’s like using vibrato, you can do it with your pinky and your 3rd finger, and Eric did it with his 2nd and 3rd.
So that’s the next part of the lick and then at the ending here, this is all based on the turnaround. I’m going to play several backing track so you can see what it sounds like in the context of the slow blues song. You got to slide it in the 9th fret of the D-string, get that minor 3rd and major 3rd pattern happening, then you can hit the 7th fret and then slide in from 10th to 12th in the B-string. So do the whole lick slowly it sounds like this [Demonstration].
So that’s the cool Eric Clapton style lick. Once again, kind of style of “Have You Ever Loved a Woman” once again, this is use with the key to B. I’m going to go ahead and play it over the backing track for you now. And for more information on blues Guitar Lessons, please visit learningguitarnow.com.
