How to Play the Banjo: Pull-Offs and Tags

Now we’re gonna learn another left hand technique. This is a pull off. It’s on the opposite direction of the slide. It goes from a higher fret—for instance the third fret (Demonstration) and then you actually pluck the string with your left hand (Demonstration). So it’s gonna go from the middle finger to the index finger, third fret to second fret (Demonstration). You can also do this to open string (Demonstration) that works as well.

We’re gonna keep learning different roll that is used as a tag. A tag being something you put on the end of a song (Demonstration). This has a reversing roll that goes from forward to backward without a fifth string in between. Our other reverse roll had a fifth string (Demonstration) before the roll turn around. This one (Demonstration) just goes forward and backward without fifth string in between. The roll goes like this (Demonstration). You can practice playing this roll just leading right into itself (Demonstration). Tag licks are often like that because they start and end on the same note (Demonstration).
