How to Play the Song "Cripple Creek" on a Fiddle

Hi! There welcome to onlinelessonvideos.com, I’m Ian Walsh here to teach to a tune today called Cripple Creek and it’s in the key of A major. I’m going to play it in two different octaves and I’m also going to play along to a jam track for Cripple Creek which you will get if you buy the video. So here’s a sample of the Cripple Creek in the key of A. [Demonstration] Let’s begin this tune practicing our A scales. We’re going to start with our low A scale which starts right here. This is your first finger on the low G string here and we’ll end the scale up here on the high A note which is on the E string here. You’re going to pass three different A’s in the scale one right here and then your open A string, and then the A on the E string. So here’s the A scale played in two parts. [Demonstration] Okay so there are lot of notes there that we’ll be using in this tune for Cripple Creek. Let’s begin with the first part. We have the open E string. It’s going to be our first note and we’re starting with a triplet. We’re going to do this with one bow. So, start with the strong up bow and play E, F, G like that. Now I’m starting with an up bow so I can have a down bow which is my stronger bow on the high note here on the A string. So, we finish out this triplet with the A. So those are two bow moves there, strong up bow and then a strong down bow. From there, let’s go from the A’s you play two of them. Okay, those notes are A, A, F, E, C and we play a D and F, and a long E. Let’s try that. [Demonstration] Okay now I’m going to add in some blending of notes here and I’m going to use my fourth finger and I’m going to use a double stop with the D and the F note. You’ll see these notes after you practice this section a few times. These notes are kind of waiting for you. All you have to do is leave your fingers down. Let me show you what I mean. [Demonstration] So right there at the end, that’s where we use our D and F. So you still play those individual notes. You just let the bow kind of stay on the A string. And then use your fourth finger, just slide up and you get that dual fiddle at dual less effect two E’s there. So let’s try that three times. [Demonstration] Now from there, we go to our C and this is a nice and easy passage here because you can use only your second and first fingers and then the open strings of course. So we play the C [demonstration]. Now, we’re going to do some kind of double stop work with these tunes. So for the C’s you’ve start with, blend it with the open E. That’s our first one and then we’re going to use that fourth finger trick again at the end. Okay, so you just walk your fourth finger up and let it blend with the open A and the fourth finger A. So this is. [Demonstration] Here we go. Let’s put everything we have together now for the first part of the Cripple Creek. [Demonstration] Now the second part is a little trickier.
