You want to feel like you’re in a movie theater? Then you need to position your surround-sound speakers just right. Most home theaters have five main speakers and one subwoofer. That’s why it’s called a 5.1 Channel Surround-Sound System.
Start by putting the front-left and front-right speakers in equal distance from that comfy chair. The speaker should be 45 to 60 degrees apart on either side of the TV screen. Now, put the center speaker in place.
Next, put your surround speakers along the side walls. They should be even to or slightly behind your cushy chair in about 2 feet above ear level. If you’re using direct radiating speakers, the best place is behind you because the sound is directed forward. To defuse the sound, aim the speakers away from you and directly toward the wall in front. That might sound odd, but if you face the speakers toward you, you don’t get the surround sound you’re listening for.
Now, place the subwoofer along the front wall. Here’s a good but unscientific way to find the best place for your subwoofer. After you hook it up, switch places with it. Then turn on some bass heavy music and walk around the room until you find where the bass sounds best. Move the subwoofer to that spot.
