How to Practice Heaving-To - Storm Tactics

The most difficult part of storm tactics is practicing heaving-to before you set off. There's two kinds of trials you should do. There's the dock trials and the sea trials. In the dock trials, you want to check that your pennant, bridle lead, and your para-anchor leads are all clear of obstructions so you don't get chafe on your gear. And this has to be done, setup on the dock, set it up so that at a 45-degree angle, things are clear to your rails, your life-Lin Pardeye stanchions, whatever. Chafe is a serious problem here. Now sea trials is another issue. If you come from southern California, you've got a problem because they don't have strong winds there. You do need at least 30-knots of wind to practice with trysail, separately, and with the para-anchor in conjunction with the trysail. The skipper's main responsibility in this area is to workout these details before setting off on the grand adventure.
