How to Practice Your Tennis Serve

No doubt about it, the serve is the most important shot in tennis since it starts each and every point. Therefore the shot immediately following the serve is also critical. Here is a little progression to help players practice their first shot after serving.

Step number one in the progression is for Kalindy to practice her serve and to immediately recover and take a split step.

Step number two is to toss balls for Kalindy to practice hitting to various targets. Here she is practicing a follow-up to a wide kick serve in the ad court. She correctly expects her right-handed opponent to catch the ball late hitting a backhand down the line. The result, Kalindy receives a forehand to attack inside-in to the open court.

Step number three is to actually return the serve and play out the point, way to go Kalindy.

Please note that this concept of practicing the first shot after the serve is so important, you will want to list each serve and potential return of serve in both the deuce and ad courts and practice each pattern individually. It's a lot of work but these types of details are what champions are made of.
