How to Prepare Early to Hit a Tennis Ball

Preparing early to hit a tennis ball has two benefits. First, it allows players to more easily react and return hard hit shots and second, it gives players the opportunity to take the ball earlier, robbing their opponent of time.

Here are two exercises to speed things up. This first exercise has a feeder tossing balls, then randomly, the feeder fakes the toss to check and see if the hitter correctly prepared the racket in the right position.

Now, the feeder calls out air or bounce, depending on the depth and height of the feed. This exercise works on several things. First, to help players develop the swing volley. Second, to help players judge when to take the ball out of the air or to let it bounce and third, the hitter will speed up the preparation time.
