Welcome to watchmojo.com. I am Lesley and these are my costars, Luca and Palmer. Our loyal Mojo audience will recognize Palmer although he’s had his summer haircut.
Speaking of summer, today we’re going to talk about preparing doggies for summer. Come here to picture you.
Okay, now you have dogs and it is summer time, what are things that you need to be aware of?
First things first, dogs and heartworm, it’s very important to take your dog to the vet on a regular basis especially in summer because around this time, spring, summer, your doctor will probably tell you to have your dog take some sort of heartworm medication. It’s preventative, it is to make sure that nothings happens to them over the summer.
Something like Sentinal for example is a good brand and it is a good product that you give your dogs a few times during the summer; you give it to them once a month, that’s it. And it protects them; you mix it in with their food. Now, what is important, why I say it’s important to talk to your vet is because there are different sizes of Sentinal for different dogs.
Another thing that is important is you need to keep in mind your dog’s coat. Now, it’s not that necessarily good to shave a dog down. For example, you’ll notice Palmer here still has some good length to his fur because he is always supposed to have a certain amount of fur to protect him. Having said that, it is important for him to have a summer hair cut because if you remember him from the last segment, he had a very, very long hair and I don’t think you’d like to be walking around with the fur coat in the summer.
So, what is important to do to prepare your dog for summer?
Take him to the groomer, get him a haircut, that is number one. And number two, go see your veterinarian and ask about heartworm medication. Number three, you may want to do something about fleas, there are variety of flea products. Sometimes your vet will give you a little bit of cream to put behind in the dogs ears and other times, they’ll give you something that is orally ingested. Some vets also will give you a specific type of collar but like I said, just talk to your veterinarian and make that decision on you own.
