The first thing you want to do is establish consistent communication, so that your child safety is a number one priority. Of course family and friends are obvious choices, but even sometimes colleagues or former peers or classmates might be an option if you feel that's appropriate.
Finally, have a talk with your child, tell the child what to do if something goes wrong and give your child emergency money that you explain you want back, that's only for the use in case of emergency. Show your child where you will put the emergency contact numbers and explain the basic rules of behavior when on the road. Such as etiquette while on a bus or a plane or van, well however they are getting to the tournament and of course how to behave at restaurants etcetera.
