Preparing for Your First Shoot

Pictures, when you do your test, you know—your test should, you need to practice. You need to practice in front of the mirror, you need to put some music on, and you need to look at the different poses in the magazines and try to emulate them and try to just relax. Because I think the biggest problem models that are just starting out is they go to a photo shoot and they freeze and then the photographer will say, okay, this one, you know—this one thing and then you get nervous and then you just—it will makes you more tense and more tense and all your pictures is going to end up looking tensed.
Now you are just starting out, so the level of expectation is not going to be that you go there and all of a sudden you are like this, you know, super model but I understand that when you get your pictures you are going to, you know, you are just starting out and with my pictures in the beginning are far different than my pictures now. But you can prepare even though you are new, that can not be an excuse because you are paying for this pictures. You know, you want to get the best pictures that you can so you are going to want them prepared ahead of time and what I used to do is I memorized around 10 different poses. I will get in front of the mirror and I would just memorize out of the magazines I copy 10 different poses that I thought I looked good doing and so when I got on a set I could always rely on those 10.
Now if the photographer is going to help you out, that is why I tell you how important it is to go and meet with them ahead of time. There is some testing photographer it is that they may tell you, you know what just be on this day and we will take care of it all then. Well, I do not really fell comfortable with that because you have not met them, you have not look at their book. They will say, all go to the website. Well, I like to feel get a feeling for the person that I am going to be shooting with especially when you are making an investment and that is what it is.
So you want to get that kind of feeling from them, how helpful they are going to be, especially if you are just starting out. But sometimes you get photographers that expects you, especially if you are on the job to know what you are doing and if they are having a bad day they may not be as helpful as you want them to be but usually they will tell you the direction that they are going in and they will kind of lead you to what you should be doing but you should be prepared to know ahead of time what you need to do especially if you are doing a job. If you are doing your testing it is your money but still your money, so you want to make sure that you could do the best you can but if it is an actual job, it is not your money anymore it is a lot of someone else’s money and there is a lot of pressure on you and you want to make sure that at the very least you have this 10 poses and you prepared and I am just relaxed. I mean, everybody there is on the same, doing the same thing and have the mission as you do, to get a great photo. So you just relax. If you find that you are tensed up and it is something that you do not feel uncomfortable about, go and take a—like an improvisation acting class and just learn how, just be silly and just do not care and laugh and this and that and kind of get that tension off because you do not want all of your pictures to look like you are scared or nervous or al of them are the same. You do not want to just keep doing the same thing and then just keep stopping and it is the same thing. You waste out the snap, change pose. Now, change pose, now change pose, the photographer likes to see that you have the ability to do that.
