How to Prevent Child Larceny

If you have a child ten or younger, they may not understand quite yet that they shouldn’t take things. By the time they are five or six, they should be starting to learn and understand this and their moral code has began to develop.

If your child is four or younger, they may not realize that taking a piece of candy from a store is larceny, it’s stealing. It’s something that you want to nip the bud early on if you’re a concerned parent. These are few steps that you can take to secure your child and make sure that they’re not a child larcenists.

Some kids lack self-control. I child might be stealing something because there’s something in their daily lives. They might see something that a friend has that they don’t have, but they want it. There are million reasons why a child might be involved in minor theft or larceny. This is why you want to explain to your children that this is wrong. Stealing is wrong. You don’t want to lay those roots for your child—to be a good, moral, abiding citizen of the world. Other kids might have personal problems that lead them to steal, low self-esteem for example. Spending time with your kids is a good way to be sure that you child ends up with higher self-esteem. He understand the things that he need not do. Things that could get him trouble.

Child larceny is not a small issue. Did you notice something in your child’s room that wasn’t there before, that you didn’t buy, that doesn’t belong there. A Play Station 3, a new football jersey, a Segway, these are things that could be alarms for you that your child is involved in child larceny. You might want to say to them, “Adam, where did you get this Segway?” or “Adam, how could you afford this Segway?” or “Alice, you don’t even have your drivers license yet, where did this C-class come from?” Think about it. Nip it in the bud, don’t let your kid get caught stealing.
