This is Susun Weed, the voice of the Wise Woman Tradition. Thank you for asking me to make these special YouTubes for you and all of the women that you help with their births and their babies. Even breastfed babies can get colic. Yes, any baby can get colic and no mama wants to have a baby who is crying in pain, because the baby's belly hurts. So mamas' want to know what can I do to prevent or treat colic.
The seeds, the aromatic seeds that are used in our cooking, that you already have in your cupboard are one of the world's best ways to prevent and eliminate colic.
You can take cumin seed or caraway seed or fennel seed, or anise seed. Put a teaspoon of anyone of these seeds in a cup of water, or put boiling water over it, let it brew for anywhere, from three to five minutes, if you want to sweeten it mildly with honey. These seeds actually became part of our cooking because they - oh, Monica Jean you are having have a hard time with that water. Let's see, let me give you a hand with the hose here.
Alright, I know the hose is pretty heavy, here we go. Alright now, oh, that hose has stuck. Not problem, I will take it all the way around the table. Here we go, you get that hose sticks. Alright, you got the hose Monica Jean?
Alright, those aromatic seeds became part of the cooking repertoire because not just for babies, but for adults too, they help prevent intestinal gas and that's what colic is. Almost any breastfeeding mom will tell you that most babies get intestinal gas, if mom eats things that are kind of gassy like beans or cabbage family plants, or even onions or garlic. Most mom say they just take a skip on those gassy foods for the first year of baby's life, or for as long as their breast feeding.
So we can help prevent colic by watching out for what we eat and eating things that are happy as a baby, and we can also deal with colic and prevent it by drinking teas made of aromatic seeds.
Certainly there are stronger, harsher herbal remedies that could be used. Some people say, well, if baby has colic, it's because mama's liver is not working well enough. The simplest and mildest of the liver remedies would include Dandelion in any form, but especially Dandelion root tincture and Milk Thistle seed tincture. These can be easily be taken in a small amount of water, and especially, you'll find that if you take them just at the beginning of your nursing session, they will help baby's liver and mama's liver to work better, and help cut down on colic.
This is Susun Weed, reminding you that herbal medicine is peoples' medicine and wishing you Green Blessings.
