Intestinal yeast overgrowth.
The complications: nerve damage, atherosclerosis, kidney and eye damage, ulcerations, loss of magnesium from the excess urination, worsens diabetes, and adds to the risk of developing high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
And what happens is, when your doctor notices your blood pressure going up a bit and your blood cholesterol, then they will put you on more medications for those conditions, whereas it may be stemming from a deficiency of magnesium.
The diagnosis is very difficult without lab test, so people don't recognize the symptoms. There is the fasting blood sugar and a hemoglobin A1C test. The A1C gives you the approximate level of glucose that your body has experienced over the previous three months. And if diabetes is suspected, you can do an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. So we will go into those testing procedures next.
Normal glucose. This is a slide you want to come back to and understand. It should be below 100 milligrams. If you are a pre-diabetic, the fasting should be between 100 and 126. If you are diabetic, then the diagnosis comes if it's above 126.
The Oral Glucose Testing is when -- we will see that on the next slide. Here we are talking about the Hemoglobin A1C. This is the range over, as I said, three months, four months period. The range from 4-7 milligram percent is for diabetic population. But the optimum for a non-diabetic is 4.5.
So here, don't wait until your doctor says your level is 7.5 and tells you that you now have diabetes. Watch your levels, watch your sugar levels. If they go above 100 for fasting glucose, start doing something about it, and we will talk about that in a few minutes what you can do to lower your blood sugar.
Same with Hemoglobin A1C, don't wait until it's above 4.5 or even 5 to start doing something.
The Hemoglobin A1C, I am just reinforcing the level you want. It's between 85 and 100 for a fasting blood sugar.
The Oral Glucose Test, this is a drink of a sugar liquid containing 18 teaspoons of sugar. Your blood glucose levels will be taken every 30-60 minutes after you drink the solution, and determine if you are above the levels that are normal for taking this test.
So it's a real strain on the body. I use to use a food or a Glucose Tolerance Test in my practice, but I don't think you can find those. You would have to take the sugar test to determine diabetes, and also it can help determine hypoglycemia.
Now, what the American Diabetic Association is talking about, for pre-diabetes, they have done a study to determine how to treat it. And fortunately, they found in the second paragraph some medications may delay the development, but diet and exercise work better.
Now, that's very crucial. At the point of knowing you are pre-diabetic, just with diet and with exercise you can prevent getting diabetes, and the drugs don't work. They don't work when they are not necessary at that point.
Now, what the ADA says about nutrition is very good. You can come back to this chart later.
What I wanted to focus on here, we will get to diet in a few more slides, but the ADA is talking about using skimmed milk and nonfat yogurt and nonfat cheese. Well, I tried to tell people to stay away from those things, because dairy is a disaccharide, it's a lactose, and it can affect yeast overgrowth in the intestines. And also, if it's not organic dairy, there could be a lot of additives to the dairy that make it unhealthy.
This business about nonfat everything is really not good, especially for children, they need natural fats in their diet. So I have a concern about these recommendations. They are telling people that they can take the diet drinks, which is an absolute no-no. The artificially sweetened drinks, the aspartame that's used actually causes nerve damage. It has 92 different symptoms, including causing diabetic symptoms and also blood sugar elevation. So please stay away from diet drinks.
Liquid oils for cooking instead of solid fats. That's actually inaccurate as well. The best solid fats to use for cooking is cook coconut oil, use olive oil on your salads, and stay away from the safflower or sunflower oils. And of course, not just cut back on high calorie snacks, but cut them out entirely.
Exercise is absolutely important. They have done studies showing that 30 minutes a day is enough to keep your blood sugar under control.
I will go quickly over this, but it's an interesting trial where they tried to -- they took 10,251 diabetics and tried to treat them intensively for blood sugar control, using many, many drugs. And what they found was in fact, more people died in the intensively treated group.
The ACCORD researchers analyzed the data and they said, they have not been able to identify any specific cause for the higher death rates. And they even said, because of the recent concerns over Avandia, they specifically reviewed it and didn't think there was any link.
However, a lot of us are very concerned, because the causes of death in this trial were from heart disease, heart attacks. The remainder were from causes such as cancer.
And when you look at the Avandia side effects, the side effects of this drug are cardiovascular.
Now, what the doctors aren't aware of is that most diabetic drugs inhibit the production of Coenzyme Q10, as do the statin cholesterol lowering drugs, and the antihypertensive drugs. So you have got -- the three sets of drugs that were used in this trial were for diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol. They were all killing off this Coenzyme Q10, which is a vitamin like substance that's inside cells, inside the mitochondria, where the energy of the body is being produced, using glucose. And in human cells, food energy is converted into body energy in the mitochondria, with the aid of this Coenzyme Q10.
95% of the human body's energy is converted with the aid of CoQ10. Therefore, the organs with the highest energy requirements: heart, lungs, liver, have the highest CoQ10 concentrations. So that's why the drug destruction of the CoQ10 leads to muscle weakness and wasting. And the heart is the biggest muscle in the body, so when you damage the heart muscle, you can cause heart attack or heart failure.
Also important is the deficiency of magnesium. Magnesium is necessary in the production of ATP.
