It's the homeowner's worst nightmare, which means prevention should be a homeowner's first priority. The first line of defense against fire is smoke detectors. Place them on every floor of the house including the garage, basement and attic.
Now remember, smoke detectors are only as good as the batteries that run them and these batteries need to be replaced about once a year. It's important to pick a date and stick to that date. I like to use daylight savings time, but you can use Mother's Day or your birthday, any date that you will stick to. It's a good idea also to replace the entire smoke detector about every ten years.
If you want an added layer of protection, think about installing sprinklers. Fires in the home often start from careless mistake. So be aware of these common risks, walking away from the stove while cooking or leaving something flammable near the stove. Speaking of flammable, many of us use candles to get rid of odors or add ambiance to our home. But it's a bad idea to leave a candle unattended ever and also watch where you put them. A candle underneath a wooden cabinet really, really bad idea, leave them out in the open.
Also, don't overload your outlets with too many plugs and then have an extension on that. That's a bad idea. You're just asking for trouble and many of us, I've done it myself while moving an appliance where we want it and then using an extension cord to get to it. It's a fire hazard and another bad idea.
Many space heaters have auto shut off feature that helps prevent fires, but be sure to keep them at least 3 feet from the furniture and walls. Check your fireplace every year for things like plugged chimneys and gas leaks and keep a screen in front of that roaring fire so the embers don't escape.
And last but not least, make sure fire extinguishers are placed in all of your high-risk areas and that every one in the household knows how to use them including your kids.
