Here’s a few tips to help you prevent spyware from infecting your machine.
The first thing you should do is make sure your machine is always up to date with the latest windows patches and security fixes. A lot of people will—like when a new fix is released, that will actually release a spyware application to take advantage of that release and they’re purely counting on the number of people that haven’t actually upgraded to Microsoft’s new release yet. So, make sure you get on the Windows up date site and keep your machine up to date with new security fixes.
The second thing is, when you go to a new website, this is typically how your machine is infected but they will—when you go to a website and it pops-up with a yellow bar saying, do you want to download this ActiveX Control or some other application, just make sure that you know exactly what that is that it’s downloading. You should get that if you’ve got the latest version of Internet Explorer which is 7. So, if it comes out with a strange ActiveX Control, you’re not sure of, then I would say don’t download it but if you got to a download, generally with IE7, it will come up with that yellow bar so not always will your download basic spyware.
Now, spyware can be—you can get simple tracking cookies as well and there is no way to really stop those unless you turn off Cookies but a lot of sites use Cookies and it’s a good feature to actually have turned on because it makes your browsing experience better. Now, if you do have spyware or you’re not sure then I would say run a third party scanner anyway just to make sure that your computer is clean right now and then you can follow those tips to prevent spyware from further in the future infecting your machine.
