How to Prevent the Onset of Arthritis
Diane: Hi, my name is Diane. I’m from Lansing, Michigan. I have degenerative joint disease. My question is I would like to know what do my three children could do to prevent getting this disease.
Dr. David Flanigan: Diane that is actually a great question. There have been over a hundred types of arthritis that have been identified and the progression of the arthritis is actually multi-factorial. A lot of times, I advice my patients and their families that one of the best ways to help prevent arthritis is actually, healthy lifestyle.
There are two things that we control. One is actually the weight that we carry. If you think about it, every weight or every pound that we have is three to four pounds that are knee sees. So you can imagine the extra stress that we can carry on our joints with every weight that in excess that we have in our bodies. Finally, if you think about healthy lifestyle a good exercise program is also very beneficial to the joints. Much research has been done in this area and showing the benefits of exercise.
If any of your loved ones do get an injury to the joint, as you can imagine trauma is one of the most common cause of arthritis. An early intervention may actually help prevent the onset and progression of the disease and this may really help.
