How to Propagate Clematis

Gord: You know I love Clematis they come in 100 if not 1000 of different variety. The way to get a Clematis is actually to go to your local garden center and pick out. But for those you want a little a challenge, you may want to try to propagate one so we brought Rod Wein. How are you doing? Rob: I am doing good, thanks. How are you doing? Gord: Now, Rob will you sort of show us some of the secrets of trade to propagate a Clematis. I heard you laughing behind me it gets not that easy. Rob: It is not that easy but certainly can be done, that is how we make a living. (Laughing) Gord: How do we start, what or where are we go? Rob: Well, you know first of all, I show you a method is not use commercially because it is do not get enough plants sort of it but people can certainly try at home it is called layering and this methods are work on Clematis or other vines for that matter. So basically, we will assume this is your plant growing in your garden, Gord: Okay, Rob: And we garden and (Laughing) plant it. Rob: So, you take off your trailers or off to your stick or what ever, carefully take stem off and then on your really need to do is just to put it down in your garden soil. Take the leaves off at one node, Okay? And then all you do is burry that node try it with down about ½ to 2 inches. And then you probably want to props off underneath this so that is not going to rot seating on top of the soil. And then what you really want you do is to leave it and comeback in about in 6to 8 weeks and you should have rooted right on that nodes there. Then you take a pairs of scissors and, I am not going to do it here, (Laughing) You are going to cut it right here. And then you just going to dig it up and take it wherever you like too. Gord: Now, how will you know like I mean I will be the first thing if you say hello is it ready or is not ready, how do you know when it is ready to take off in the mother plant? Rob: You will you will see some root tapering there and what you might want to do is actually take it and plant it into a pot first before you put it right into the ground, and then once it is rooted right through outside of the container and just flip the container if you see the roots all way around there and it is really to plant and grow on his own. Gord: That is a really good idea.
