One of the most important aspects of a healthy lawn is adequate even watering. In a heavy clay soil, most generally in hot weather, it will hold about a half an inch of water twice a week.
In some areas where you’ve got a mixture of sand and clay you can get by with much less than that. In some areas where you have a lot of sand, you’ll have to use less water more frequently.
How do you know if you’re getting a half and inch of water on your lawn for sprinkler setting? The best way is to set out straight sided cans like a tuna fish can. I like to put cans in the areas that are real green and other areas that are stressed.
You’ll set them in various parts of your lawn. You can tell if you’re getting even coverage. And turn your sprinkling system on and measure how long it takes to get a half and inch of water for setting then you’ll know how long to set the water on that station.
After a half an hour, we’ve got one inch of water in this particular can but in this area over here we have almost no one. I can put my hand underneath here and it won’t even get wet that’s why this area is dry.
One important aspect of a healthy lawn is how you mow. It’s very important that you have a sharp blade and that you have a proper lawn more height set. In the spring, you can have it set fairly low but when it gets hot in the summer like right now, you want to adjust your mower to the highest position or about four to four and half inches that will shave the ground and keep it from using so much water.
Join me next time I will head back to the garden for a harvest time.
