How to Protect Yourself from Melanoma

Melanoma is among the deadliest of cancers. Partly because of the time it takes for it to be noticed, diagnosed and treated. Caught early enough, Melanoma can be successfully halted. Yet, when it's ignored it can spread beyond the reach of most treatments.

Most people think of Melanoma as mainly a threat to the fair skinned. Fact is, it's even deadlier for African-Americans, perhaps because neither doctors nor patients are expecting it. Here is how to stay safe. First know that it's sneaky. Nearly two-thirds of Melanomas among African-Americans occur in areas, that get little sun exposure including the feet palms and toe nails. The inside of the mouth and nose and in women the genitals.

Second protect yourself. Wear sunscreen, long sleeves and a hat when you are out in the sunshine. In addition, examine your skin from head-to-toe every month. Look for deep black spots on skin and deep black streaks on nails. Ask your family doctor or dermatologist to check all potential trouble spots annually. But don't wait if you notice an odd mark. See your doctor right away. And finally, push for treatment with early intervention. Melanoma has a 95% cure rate. Remember beating Melanoma is all about timing. The sooner it's treated the better.
