Sherri Dmyterko: New research find that 71% of Canadians say they are following the Canada Food Guide to healthy eating, and while this is great news for the health of Canadians, there is new lifestyle could be putting the health of our teeth at risk, for acid-ware. Dr. Jordon Appel is a dentist in Toronto.
Dr. Jordon Appel: The acids of many healthy foods and drinks are causing damage to our teeth by softening the enamel and making enamel more vulnerable to brushing. Some examples of the citric foods would be oranges, salad dressing with vinegar, fruit juices and wine.
There are some surprising citric foods such as pesto, bananas, even ketchup and mustard. Acid-wares are concerned because it can't be reversed. Once the enamel the protective armor tube is gone, it's gone forever because of improved oral hygiene greater incidence of fluoridated water, and healthier habits. I expect a new dental focus to be asked for.
Sherri Dmyterko: Everyday foods and beverages can range in acidity from low to medium to high. Carbonated beverages, energy drinks and most berries are cost as higher acidity. Wines, many fruits, and tomatoes are in the medium range whereas still mineral water, grains and legumes fall in the lower acidity range.
Dr. Jordon Appel: We want Canadians to understand what acid-ware is, what the risk level is, and how to protect your teeth against it. Sensitivity, discoloration, teeth looking more transparent, substances around the edges, may all be sign you are suffering from acid-ware.
Sherri Dmyterko: So what can we do to protect our teeth from acid-ware?
Dr. Jordon Appel: If you are going to drink something acidic like fruit juices, or carbonated beverages use a straw. So you can direct the liquids away from the teeth. If you are eating something acidic, don't brush your teeth right afterwards. Wait an hour, even brush your teeth before hand you like or you can rinse some water. When brushing use a toothpaste like ProNamel from Sensodyne. Go help reharden to soften enamel surface. And lastly go for regular dental checkups and follow your dentist advice.
