David: Hi, I am David Epstein. This is Growing Wisdom and I am with Wayne Mezitt, and we are at Weston Nurseries. You reserve, you know if I looked at the Nursery, there is a lot of space this time of the year for daylilies. So, obviously these are very popular plant.
Wayne: They are very versatile and they are coming in a lot of different colors, and sizes and types .We got tall ones, we got short ones, we got re-bloomers, some that are almost ever green.
David: That is pretty amazing and we are going to talk a little bit about care for this folks today. So you mentioned tall, middle, low, tell me about that a little bit.
Wayne: This is the tall type here. Some of them are even taller than this. Got to be 3ft. Sometimes even a little bit taller. And then the medium types tend to be a foot to 2ft tall. And the low types, like this “Happy returns”, grows maybe a foot high at the most.
David: So, back at the border, middle of the border and front of the border.
Wayne: That is right. Also, you should consider the time that they bloom. There are some that bloom earlier by maybe 2 or 3 weeks from now, or later. Some may even bloom in the August. They need a little bit of maintenance. And let me show you, first of all if you have yellow leaves like this, what you want to do is just pull those off. The other maintenance that we like to recommend is to take off the blooms that have finished. And what this does is to keep the plant from forming seeds and also looks nicer. So, a plant that has finished blooming like this one bloomed yesterday and they only bloom for one day.
David: They really are, just one day for each bloom?
Wayne: One day for each bloom. Just cut it off. Just take a pair of pruning sheers or a knife, cut it off. This is one that will not come back in the bloom this year. This will bloom again next year. On the ever blooming types, you do not want to cut this one off, but you do want to cut this too that have old, used up flowers on them and this one on the seed pod. What you are doing is allowing the new shoots to come up and this will continue to flower all summer.
David: Wayne, once again thank you. Always educational and we hope you have learned a bit here. So, whether it is yellow, purple, even some pinks, oranges, multi-colored double blooms, there is got to be a daylily out there for you. Come back every week for all of our tips, hints and helps at growingwisdom.com.
