Hi! I am Dave Epstein. This is growing wisdom and you know hooker is a very popular plant in the garden. And during the spring time I like to cut this back and I just wanted to share with you how to do that.
So this particular one here, I have already cut back and you can see that it looks nice and neat, this is a lot a new growth that is coming up here and this will continue the thicken up and eventually later on in the summer it will get a nice little spiky flower.
Let me show you one that I have not touched yet and show you how I cut it back. This particular plant has already started its new growth here. What you are seeing flat along the edges is last years growth. And that is really not a comeback, so I am going to cut that off to make this plant look a lot neater, it will also a give it a little bit more airflow and just give it a little bit more general pleasing look.
Basically I just take a pair pruners and I just start cutting around carefully so you do not cutting a new growth off that is the key. And I am just taking all the old growth away and you can already see how much neater this looks.
There is really no trick here you just want to cut the old stems back to the base of the plant. Again, cut the old stems right back to the base of the plant being careful not to cut any new growth. So clear that away and then what I will do with all these leaves is I will just put this into the clamp host pile.
And eventually it will end up back with this plant or some other plant anyway. So there are several different varieties of hooker I have around the yard. And I am just going to do the same thing to all of those and these guys will be good to go for the rest of the summer.
