My mom has always had my prune the rose of sharon in the fall after it is done blooming. However Im worried that I may have over done it. Thinking that It would be good to cut it back alot I pruned it back to where it initially started to split off on the branches. So I ended up taking a good portion of it off. This is an old bush about 8 to 10 years minimum and Im afraid I may have killed it. Is there anything I can do to be sure that I didnt or to keep it from possibly dying? Some of the branches are about 1 1/2 in diameter. Please help...I am so very worried that I have destroyed this beautiful bush!!

the video was very helpful as I am not much of a gardener and it showed me how to prune. I also wanted to know how to prune my rose of sharon to have one main trunk so it looks more like a bush. Right now it has 3 smaller trunks that fan out. Can you help me? I need detailed instructions as I said, not much of a gardener. Thank you!

Loved the vedio and I need to ask if after the flowers start comming can I cut it back ? I didn't do it in the spring and they are 15 to 20 feet tall.

I am glad to have found this information i just planted a rose of sharon in my back yard and wasnt sure how to keep it up to date so it would not grow out of control .Thanks for the information.

I am so pleased to find this website and have already forwarded it on to some of my family and friends. My Rose of Sharons were started with one main trunk and the type of topiary that is like an upside down unbrella (sorry for the lack of proper topiary id, but that is the best I can do for now), so I need some advise on how to maintain that look and produce larger flowers as apposed to lots of smaller ones covering each branch. I also am having trouble with one that gets aprox. 4 hrs of sun daily, to bloom at all. The weather seems to get chilly before it can open it's flowers. I do wish they had the videos available with the option for captioned use as well as audio. The one I just viewed would have suited my situation better with the camera pulled back alittle farther, but for what it's worth, I am really happy about stumbling onto this great way of sharing information as I am more of a visual learner!

Hi, I am Dave Epstein, welcome to Growing Wisdom and for many of you one of your favorite plants is a rose of Sharon, Hibiscus and one of the things that I recommend doing in the spring time before it leaves out is pruning it and pruning the rose of Sharon is probably one of the easier things you can do basically you just hacked it back to the size that you want and it will flush out wonderful new growth in the spring and beautiful flowers later in the summer. This particular rose of Sharon here is a little bit taller than I like and we are just going to start literally pruning it back and we are just cut the branches down, so that I get this down to about two in a half or 3 feet tall.

As I prune this, I want prune it just above a little bud and that bud now will flash out a wonderful new growth later on in the summer you can really bring this down quite low. I usually bring mine down to about 3 feet tall and then it will grow another couple of feet during the course of summer. If you do not prune this they can get very big, growing anywhere from 8 to 12, to 15 feet high to get really huge and the flowers are as big if you do not prune it so if you want big, bold, beautiful flowers really prune your rose of Sharon hard every spring.
