Okay, so you’ve got your backpack. Realize it can be pretty heavy anywhere from 45 to 65 pounds. It depends on how light or how heavy you want to carry things and you need to really work up to it so when you’re training program you should start like hike around parks, hike around hills nearby your house and get conditioned for it.
To put your backpack on, you grab the straps with both hands, bend your knees, not your back and lifted up on the one knee, slide one arm through it and then just push it up onto your back and then you get the other arm through, tighten your waist belt. You want most of your weight sitting on the waist belt, so cinch it very tight not gets way off your shoulders.
And then a lot of these packs especially for mountaineering and long backpacking trips, they have a chest strap and so I like to tighten down the chest strap, not so tight that you can’t breathe, but tight enough that it takes some weight off your shoulders then it really helps.
The other thing I like to have of poles especially if you have a heavy pack. A lot of people don’t like poles but on the way down it helps to have good poles to take a lot of weight off your knees.
Okay, you’re all pack up, ready to go you’re at the trail head. Remember, play it safe and let someone know where you’re going on when you’re expected back, what equipment you’re carrying and always hike with a buddy.
Climb high, climb safe, thanks.
