Hi! I am Doctor Lauren at petside.com. There are special protective collars called E-collars, that are made especially for your pet. These E-collars will prevent your pet from licking at an area that's just recently had a surgery or from chewing at an area that might bother them. I am going to show you how to put these collars on and give you some tips as to how you can keep your pet comfortable at home.
If your pet just recently had surgery, your veterinarian can provide you with an E-collar. But if you are at home and notice that your pet is licking or chewing at something, you can go to a local pet store; most of them sell E-collars. When picking up the right E-collar for your pet, you want to make sure that the hole is big enough so that your pet's head can fit through it, but that it's long enough so that your pet can't chew our leg. Then you take the E-collar and just gently place it over your pet's head.
I like to secure the E-collar on with your pet's own collar. You want to just make sure that you can fit two fingers underneath the E-collar, that way you know it won't be too tight for your pet. When you are feeding your pet, it's okay to take the E-collar off, just make sure to put it back on, when they are finished. And if you have a dog, and you are taking your dog for a walk, it's also okay to take the E-collar off, so that way they won't bump into the things. Make sure your pet has nice wide open spaces in your house, again so that they won't bump into things.
