How to Quickly Prepare for an Overhead Shot

Early preparation consist of four elements. The key is to do them all at the same time. It may seem like a lot to learn, but after a dozen or so shadow swings, you will get an initial feel for the idea.

First, turn the shoulder sideways to the net. Second, step back with the right foot, if you are right-handed. Third, set the racket hand inlined with the right ear, just like a quarterback setting up to throw a pass. Finally, the fourth movement is to line up the ball with the left or non-racket hand and arm.

The pros make it look easy but timing the overhead usually takes patience and practice to master. After all, the ball is dropping downward out of the sky and you are going to reach up with your racket to strike it over your head preparing quickly efficiently and consistently is essential.
