In this clip on beginner’s billiards, I’d like to show you how to rack the balls for various games. What’s the proper racking technique?
Let’s start off with one of the most common games and it’s the game of 8-ball. Everyone knows that if you play it that the 8 ball should be in the middle and the top ball should be on the foot spot on the table. So the bottom of the table, the spot as it is usually called, the foot spot. Now, depending on the set of rules that you’re using, if you’re using the world standardized rules, the 8 ball has to be in the middle and each of the bottom corners of the balls, there should be one of each suit. So on 8 ball, we have 1 through 7 which are solids or lows, and then we have 9 through 15 which are stripes or highs, and the 8 ball is in the middle. But one of each should be in the corner. You’ll also have to be cognizant of house rules, almost every place that you go that is not playing a standardized set of rules will have their own individual rules.
You may be playing one of the league systems, the American Pool Players Association. That set of rules, the APPA rules, all you need is the 8 ball in the middle. You don’t have to worry about any other balls.
For 9-ball, you rack them in the shape of a diamond with the 9 ball in the middle. Now, all of these games, you don’t want to do this. You want to just kind of take the balls up and roll them with your fingers to make sure that you have a nice tight rack. With the 9-ball, the 9 ball is in the middle, the 1 has to be on the foot spot and all the other balls have to be random. But the key is to give your opponent a nice tight rack. No loose racks. You want to give them the kind of rack that you want them to give you. That’s how you rack in a game of pool.
