Let us begin learning how to drill the students knowing the grand staff. I prefer to begin drilling them away from the piano then we will put it together with the keyboard later.
You know, to fragment all these different things and have them learned very well and internalized them so it seems like a natural language. It is a natural language.
Now, begin from the lowest space, make a print out of the staff or take a big board, across the board or chalkboard and draw the grand staff and then start drilling from low A going to A. Teach them that this is A and this line is B. You can draw notes there as you have on there on your computer. So, this is A, B, C, D, E, F and this space is G.
Again and keep going with this. This is A, B, C, D, E, F, G; A, B, C, D, E, F, G. Do that a few times then go up to this next segment, A, B, C, line is middle C, D, E, F, G. Again, A, B, C, D, E, F, G. Do that a few times and go to the next one.
This space is A, line is B, space C, line is D, E, F to G. Go over that a few times and continue every day to rehearse with them and train them until you see that they start to be familiar with the grand staff. Just keep going over that the way you went over with the alphabet with them. You know how they used to chant A, B, C, D, E, F, G. It is the same type of thing. You want them to learn this and to internalize it.
