Welcome to GuitarLessons.com. I’m Nate Savage. In this lesson, we’re going to be talking about how to read a chord chart that you would find in real book or a fake book. Now what I did at the beginning of the lesson, just now, that little progression that I was playing, it’s Bm, down to an A7, Am, D7, then a GM7. A lot of time you’ll find in real books or fake books that’ll you’ll have just a chart with a staff on it with a measure section of with a chord above each measure when the chord changes and maybe just slash rhythms that indicate eighth notes or quarter notes or something like that and that’s all you get maybe a little caption of the top, jazz or balsa field or something like that. You’re going to be free kind of to make up what you want or whatever fits the style just using those chords, it’s kind of a roadmap or a guide.
So, if you had a chord chart that looks something like this, like that progression we had earlier, maybe it would say in the style of jazz or something. You would have that first chord, a BM7 for one barré, then you would have something maybe in the next barré that set an A7, A Dominant 7th chord, or maybe just slash marks on it to indicate a quarter note rhythm, the next measure might be just two beats of a minor, Am7 chord, then you would have another like a D7 symbol above that for the next two or quarter note marks, and then maybe you would finish with something like a GM7 for a barré, that would be a whole note [Demonstration] and it may have slashes for quarter notes or something like that [Demonstration].
So just be aware of this when you get a fake book or if you show up to a gig where somebody is just drawn out rhythm on the chord chart and that’s all you have. Don’t worry about it. I really suggest you go by a fake book or something like that and just start looking to it. And learn some of the easier songs and getting use to just copying chords with just the given chords in a suggested field.
