How to Recognize the Symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis
Male1: If someone had droopy eyes late in the day and they called you up and see you, what would you be thinking about initially if someone have little droopiness for their eyes and was getting progressively late in a day.
Male2: I would first think about diagnosis called Myasthenia Gravis.
Male1: Besides that, is there anything else you’ll be thinking too nearly?
Male2: Sure. There could be other disease of the muscle itself which can cause the itchiness of the eyes. And also, one of the more common causes of droopy eyes is just aging.
Male1: So, it’s part of a natural process.
Male2: Like normal but it frequently occurs in people who are older and causing droopy eyes because of aging.
Male1: You mentioned Myasthenia Gravis and you mentioned that if it’s only one side of the face, acute onset, wear tearing, you might think it’s something else, is that true? Called Bells Palsy sometimes you see.
Male2: Yeah, that’s interesting that you said about because Bells Palsy actually a weakness in the facial muscles. And so what you would see in Bell’s Palsy is actually the eye that’s the problem. We’ll get actually open more. So, it won't be a drooping in the eye, it will be open more, that’s because one of the muscles of the face closes the eye. And so, if you lose that closure then the eye will be more open and that’s the facial palsy or if you don’t have a cause of a facial palsy, then that’s called “Bells Palsy”.
Male1: So in other words, the history will help a little bit but now you have to examine the patient. So the first thing, we have to see what the disease is. They come to you. You notice that their both eyes seemed to be droopy. And I say in the morning, I wake up, it’s not so bad but late in the day this would be more slightly what?
Male2: Myasthenia Gravis.
