Welcome to Screencastr, episode 6. I am Michael Stewart. In this episode, I am going to show you how to recover deleted files. It is a common misconception that once you delete a file from the recycle bin, it is gone forever. However, this may not be the case. When your operating system deletes a file, all it really does is mount a space in your hard drive that the file occupies as free space. It is still there, but now your computer is probably happy to create a new data on top of it. So in the future, you can recover the lost data.
The file recovery program that I am going to be using today is restoration. But there will be links at screencastr.com. To other file of recovery program such as undelete plus and inspector file recovery. The first thing I am going to do is delete the file, so I go in here and delete it and I am going to remove from your recycle bin as well. So, once you realized that an important file is missing, you will then stop what you are doing because the more you use your computer, the higher the chance that the file will be overwritten.
Now, you can run your file recovery program. I am going to be using restoration which is a stand-alone executable. So, here is restoration and I am going to first of all select the drive which the file is on and then I am going to type in part of the file which is the extension and start search. As you see here, it has found the file. However, the name is different to what it was before. This sometimes happens, but you usually need to find your file from what its extension is and I know that because mine is a PPTX file. So now we are going to restore the file and I am just going to store it to desktop. And there it is.
So, that is how to restore a deleted file. However, remember you are much better off buying an external hard drive and setting your computer to automatically backup.
This week’s download of the week is desktop teleporter, a program that is great to anyone who loves having a neat desktop. Desktop teleporter teleports all of your files over your desktop. Desktop teleporter is stand-alone executable which is here and I can just run it. Once running, it will be down in the taskbar. I can open up the control panel and select what file extension we want to exclude from being teleported and also the file names we want to exclude. We can also set the folder where it should teleport to. Once we have done this, we can just save and hide and will stay at the end of the taskbar and teleport all files over the desktop.
This week I am going to introduce a new segment FirefoxAdd-on of the week. This segment may not be every week, but please give me some feedback to Micheal@screencastr.com to what you think about the segment. So the Firefox Add-on for this week is Ubiquity. Ubiquity provides a way to modify web pages using text commands. I am going to show some examples of the commands you can use. Here is a list of all the ones I have installed and I am going to show you an example of my favorites.
Okay, so let us say on my website, maybe michaelstewart.com and I come to a word which I do not know what it means. I am going to select that word and type in the hot key for Ubiquity. For me, this is control-space, and I can type in “def this”. Def is a shortcut for define and once you type the first few words over the command, it is going to select the closest command and then when I type this, it mean whatever selected, so that is speed. As you can see here, it has provided a list of definitions from answers.com.
Another way to do this would be to go type in G for Google and type in ‘define:this’. This will type in the Google defines speed and if you do not know, when you are in Google, you can type in define, colon and a word and Google search for definitions of that word. Another thing you can do is look up the weather. So I am going to type in weather in Brisbane and then it is going to search for the weather in Brisbane. As you can see here, the weather is 150C and its humidity of 24.
