After a stroke this pathways or the brain itself maybe damage resulting in paralysis or Spasticity. Paralysis is in ability to move of muscle or muscle group voluntarily. Spasticity is defined as an increase of muscle tone then makes movement difficult or uncontrollable. Spasticity can result in the tight fist they cannot be easily opened, a stiff leg, a bend elbow or a pointed foot. Paralysis in Spasticity lead the balance problems in fact 40% or stroke survivors have a serious fall in the year following their stroke.
Proper rehabilitation can prevent this; the goal of rehabilitation is to make the patient as independent as possible. Strokes survivor’s mobility problems can work with a physical therapist to restore their walking ability range of movement imbalance. Physical therapy is used to treat Spasticity, a therapist work daily with the patient gently stretching tight muscles and repositioning body parts in effort to restore normal movement.
Occupational therapy is another primary part of rehabilitation it involve three learning skills necessary for everyday life such as dressing, eating and using the bathroom. May prescription medication they are also available to help treat the effects Spasticity and paralysis. A group of drugs called Benzodiazepines act on the gather receptor in the central nervous system to relax muscles and the easy effects of Spasticity. Valium or Diazepam and clonopin or Clonazepam are often recommended. Tizanidine which is market under the name of Zanaflex works in the central nervous system to relax muscles. Tizanidine affects the short acting and should be save for times when immediate relief is needed.
Medications such Dantrolene sodium and Baclofen or other options for easy in the contractions tightness and paralysis of muscles, assisted devices can improve safety and increase movement around the home. Ramps, grab bars, raise toilet seats and tub benches are all useful options. Move the legs, including leg braises, walkers and wheelchairs can help stroke survivors have more independent mobility. After a stroke a person can experience difficulty because for right or once simple tasks.
It is important to be patient and understanding during the rehabilitation process. Decrease mobility after a stroke can be devastating but there are many treatments they can help work closely with the Doctor and therapist to device the rehabilitation plan that fits.
