How to Recover from a Tip Over Using a Winch
Joel: This is the position that nobody ever wants to find themselves in. You just rolled your truck. Damn, what are you going to do now?
This is the basics of how to recover your vehicle. When you have a vehicle that situate like this, the first you want to make sure is that everybody’s okay in the vehicle. In my vehicle you can see I have 5-point harness in the front, 4 point harness in the back where everybody ride in. Everything is securely tied to the cage itself. We’re going to the back of the vehicle. Everything’s always got to be secured because you'll never know when it’s going to happen. And when it happens, it’s always bad.
When you're going to recover a vehicle like this, the best way to do it is to get a cable all the way over the vehicle and down to the other side. Usually, you’re doing this to a vehicle that’s in a slightly better shape than mine and you don’t want to dent it. So usually what you'll is take your recovery strap from the opposite side of the vehicle down to the cage on the bottom so you’re using leverage to pull around the whole vehicle to help ride it.
So you’re going to be able to take your strap and strap to the strong part of the cage to be pillared where all the triangulation comes into play. You run your strap through, double lines their link and run it across. In that way the strap itself is intact in the side of the vehicle that happen to hit the ground.
Bobby?
Bobby: Yeah?
Joel: We’re pulling in?
Same stuff applies to the other side. You want to make sure that you have a weight on the vehicle on the other side of the strap to make sure that it doesn’t cause, it doesn’t fly away if you have an issue.
Keep going. Pull it in.
Make sure everybody’s’ clear from the vehicle before you start winching it back over. You don’t want to pull it back on somebody.
Winch it in.
And that’s how you recover a vehicle.
