Shiela: Arnold’s large loft space is perfect for entertaining. Usually we just hang out on
his sofa but for this movie night, I thought it would be fun to create a beach
setting in Arnold’s living room to go along with the movie’s theme. Arnold’s
brown sofa didn’t exactly go with my beach theme so I decided to cover it with
blue lycra that was a $1.99 a yard and these striped beach towels made great
bolster pillows. Next I tried to create a more intimate area on the vast wooden
floor. I’m using these grass mats to dress up the floor. These were $10 a piece
and I found them in Chinatown. These would also work really well if you
decided to do an outdoor movie night. Now a beach or even an indoor one
would not be complete without somewhere to cool off so here’s my idea for an
ocean. A collapsible kiddie pool with a few of my own touches to play along
with the movie theme. Help, lifeguard please.
And my version of stadium seating, the collapsible beach chair. I also have party
favors for all of my movie going friends, a pair of flipflops, a striped beach towel
bolster and the all important treat for the night Swedish fish. Fish, sharks, jaws,
get it? Every movie night needs munchies so I’ve planned a special menu of self
served goodies on a buffet table that gets the seaside treatment. For my Jaws
movie party, I wanted everything to be really easy but I wanted it to have sort of
a beachy theme to it both in terms of the food as well as the design. The first
thing I got was simple popcorn that you can buy in the bag so that it didn’t take
me any time to make. I got these and I also served them in a little child’s bucket
which I think is really cute. Next on the menu is sushi of course and I’ve served
it on resin platters and used sand to give it a little bit of hype.
And one of my favorite things to eat while I’m at the beach are lobster rolls.
These took me less than 15 minutes to make and they taste great and the
highlight of this movie night is my take on the martini. The sharktini. I didn’t
want to have to be a bartender all night so I put my sharktinis in this fish bowl so
that everybody can come and take their own sharktini and shake it up. Look at
that sharktini, drink at your own risk. Perfect. My friend Arnold is just about
home. Wait till he sees how I’ve turned our ordinary movie rental night into an
experience to remember. So Arnold what do you think about what I’ve done
with the place?
Arnold: I can't believe I have a beach in my house.
Sheila: Did you hear that, is that a shark alert?
Arnold: No Sheila, that was the doorbell. Sharktini anyone. Here you go Nancy.
Female: What time does the movie start?
Sheila: Here’s to a good movie night. Take your shoes off and come on the beach.
Midway through the movie, my guests were ready to sink their jaws into
something sweet. My idea, store bought ice cream sandwiches with blood red
raspberry puree that anyone can make.
Male: Sheila, I have to tell you this has been a super movie night and we had a ball so
thank you so much.
